Thing 9: Databases and Searches
I have 2 choices I would like to share today, Pebble-Go and Kid-Rex. Yes, Pebble-Go is a commercial service and a very good one! I was introduced to this product when I started working at HTC. This is a powerful research tool for K-3rd grade students, I have even used this product with my 4th grade students as well and they loved it! Here students can learn the early stages on using a database to complete research. Students are also introduced to citations. This past year I had 2nd graders citing their research projects on insects. Pebble Go is a fun interactive database which offers plenty of facts and information along with activities, games and even worksheets. I highly recommend this site, if you don’t have it in your library it is worth purchasing.
KidRex: This is a new search engine to me and I loved it! What a great kid friendly tool. Not only are the search results geared for children, but I must say I loved the section on internet safety under the Parent section. This is a search engine I will add to my library webpage as soon as possible. I will use this with my K-6 students whenever they complete searches of any kind on the internet! What a well thought out tool………….
